ABB ACS800 Warning FF8D Start Interlock Missing

Getting the FF8D Start Interlock warning on your ABB ACS800? Learn how to identify the missing permissive signal, check the RMIO board, and restore your drive's run command.

ABB ACS800 Warning FF8D Start Interlock Missing

If you are trying to start your ABB ACS800 drive and the motor refuses to turn, you might see Warning FF8D: Start Interlock flashing on the control panel. This can be frustrating, but it is important to know that this is usually not a hardware failure within the drive itself.

Instead, the FF8D code is a "permissive" warning. It means the drive's internal logic is waiting for a specific "OK to Run" signal from your machine’s safety or control circuit. Without this signal, the drive stays in standby to prevent accidental or unsafe operation. Here is how to find and fix the break in that signal.

What is the Start Interlock Signal?

In the ABB ACS800, the Start Interlock signal is typically a 24V DC hardware input. On the RMIO (Relay Output and Digital Input) board, there is a dedicated terminal—usually labeled DIIL (Digital Input Interlock)—that must be energized for the drive to start.

If the circuit connected to this terminal opens (due to an E-stop, a tripped safety relay, or a broken wire), the drive immediately drops the Start Interlock and displays FF8D.

Common Causes of FF8D

  • Open Emergency Stop: A physical E-stop button in the field is pressed or has a loose contact.
  • Safety Relay Tripped: A safety gate, light curtain, or pull-cord has been triggered.
  • Broken Field Wiring: The wire carrying the 24V signal from the cabinet to the drive’s RMIO board is severed.
  • Loose RMIO Connection: The terminal screw at the drive has vibrated loose.
  • Missing Jumper: If the drive does not use an external safety circuit, the factory-installed jumper wire between +24V and DIIL has fallen out.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

1. Inspect the RMIO Board (Terminal DIIL)

The first place to look is the drive's control terminal block.

  • Locate terminal DIIL on the RMIO board (refer to your specific wiring diagram, but it is usually part of the digital input block).
  • Use a multimeter to measure the voltage between DIIL and Digital Ground (DGND).
  • You should see 24V DC. If you see 0V, the interlock signal is missing.

2. Check Parameter 16.01 (Run Enable)

While FF8D usually refers to the DIIL terminal, it is closely related to the "Run Enable" logic.

  • Navigate to Parameter 16.01 (RUN ENABLE).
  • Check if this is set to DIIL. If it is, the drive is hard-coded to look for that physical 24V signal.
  • If you are commissioning a drive and don't have the safety circuit wired yet, you can temporarily set this to YES to test the motor (Warning: Only do this for testing, as it bypasses safety interlocks).

3. Trace the External Safety Loop

If you measured 0V at the DIIL terminal, you must "walk the wire" to find where the power is being cut:

  • Check all E-stop buttons connected to that drive.
  • Inspect any external relays or PLCs that provide a "Permissive" signal to the drive.
  • Look for blown 24V DC control fuses in your main electrical cabinet.

4. Verify the Transmission Module Cover

On some larger ACS800 frame sizes, the RMIO board is mounted on a plastic platform. Ensure that the control unit is firmly seated and that the ribbon cables connecting the RMIO to the main power unit are not loose, as this can cause intermittent signal loss.

How to Reset the FF8D Warning

The FF8D code is a Warning, not a Fault. This means as soon as you restore the 24V signal to the DIIL terminal, the warning will usually disappear from the screen automatically, and the drive will return to "Ready" status.

Note: Depending on your "Start Function" settings, you may need to cycle the Start command (turn it off and back on) once the interlock is restored before the motor will actually spin.

Summary Checklist

Action Check For
Voltage Check 24V DC at terminal DIIL.
Physical Check E-stops pulled out, safety gates closed.
Wiring Check Tight terminal screws and intact cables.
Parameter 16.01 Set to "DIIL" or "YES" (for testing).
